There are many different reasons and times in your life where you’ll need the services of a handyman. This could range from simply not being able to climb a ladder to not having the correct equipment. It can often be more expensive to buy all the necessary equipment you need than to simply hire a handyman. Here are a few reasons why you may call a handyman.

It’s all gone wrong

What do you do if you’ve attempted to DIY something, and it has gone horribly wrong? The paint job that you have attempted is all patchy or the dishwasher you have installed is leaking terribly. Contact your local handyman! Handymen can often be cheaper than painters or plumbers and have a wide range of skills.

You can’t afford to mess it up

There are certain jobs that have damaging consequences if you mess it up. This could range from plastering, tiling, or plugging a hole in your pool. If you plaster incorrectly, it can cause damp problems to your walls and result in long term damage. Similarly, if you tile your bathroom incorrectly it can cause long term damp problems and damage – not to mention the water waste and damage you could do by repairing a pool poorly. It is often more convenient, faster, and cheaper in the long term to hire a handyman.

You don’t have the equipment

If you need large scale equipment that you will use rarely or you need specific, specialised tools, it may be less expensive to get an experienced, equipped handyman to handle the job.

The job is too big to handle alone

The job may be too large to handle on your own. There may be challenges with heavy lifting or difficulties with time constraints to take into account. While you can get a lot of assistance through online tutorials, taking on a large job may result in outcomes that you didn’t anticipate or even someone getting hurt.

You don’t want to climb a ladder

If you’re uncomfortable climbing a ladder to complete a task, it may be better to call a professional instead. It may be manageable to replace thatch or change a light on a high ceiling but as soon as you introduce a ladder, you’re introducing a level of risk and danger that may be best left to skilled, experienced workers.

You simply don’t have the energy or patience

It may simply be too much and thinking about your errands at home is causing you unnecessary stress. Contacting a handyman could lift that weight off your shoulders.

Installation

Installation may require you to get in some awkward or dangerous positions. If you’re not up to installing a satellite dish on your roof, or upgrading your internet system requires too many wires and extended routers, it may be the best option to call in the reinforcements and ask a local handyman for assistance.

Maintenance

Household maintenance is vital to maintaining its value. This covers everything from garden work to maintaining the plumbing and wiring of a household. This work can also be remarkably complicated. Consider where you live and the jobs specific to you: do you have wooden floors, a pool, or a thatched roof? These need specific, regular services to maintain them. It is often best to contact a handyman to manage these tasks. It may not be worth it to have an industrial polisher in your house, but your handyman may have access to one. There are dangers involved in rethatching a roof, etc. Whatever your reasons, take these into consideration and make your decision from there.

Assembly

Assembly can range from a flat-pack table to a solar panel system. Depending on your background and priorities, you may want a handyman’s eye on the task. It could be worthwhile to consider the monetary value of your time. Usually, the work that a handyman will do could be done yourself. If handling it yourself makes more financial sense, give it a go, but if your time could be spent in a more valuable way (whatever that may mean for you), consider hiring someone to help.

Painting

There are the people who will call their friends over, provide the braai and beer and ask their mates to climb a ladder and paint the walls. If this is your friend group, that is great! Otherwise call in your handyman. Paint is catching up to modern times in complexity and there can be many specifics and instructions on how to apply it. Also, the process of priming and prepping beforehand doubles the work. As always, it depends on many factors, such as what you are painting, where you are painting, and what results are you are anticipating.

Know your limits

Some of these tasks may be super easy for you but others may just be out of reach. Call in your handyman for assistance and if the work interests you then engage them, ask them questions, and get advice – maybe you could give it a try next time.

When it comes to hiring a handyman, it’s often for work that you could complete on your own. So the question is not “Can I do this?”, but “Do I want to complete this task?”, and “Is it a good idea?” If your answer is “No” to either of these questions then contact a local handyman and get all your home errands off your to do list: changing light bulbs, cleaning your gutters, installing a new sink or appliance, fixing a leaky tap, building a treehouse – whatever the task may be.

By calling in the professionals, you are sure to save yourself some time, money, effort, and maybe even a few splinters.
